Work on the construction of a massive new office building for aircraft manufacturer Airbus is due to start at its Filton site next month following the appointment of a building contractor.

Miller Construction has been selected to deliver two projects totalling £37 million at the new Airbus Aerospace Park.

The contracts include a £10 million project comprising the refurbishment and alteration of Pegasus House, together with the partial demolition and refurbishment of Old Filton House and construction of a new 25,000sqm office building, totalling £27 million.

Chris Webster, Chief Executive, Miller Construction, said:

“We have been working closely with Airbus and their consultants over the past six months and are looking forward to progressing together to deliver the new office building and fully refurbished Pegasus House.”

“We have a proven track record in the delivery of award winning accommodation and we are confident these projects will both meet and exceed Airbus’ requirements and expectations.”

“These contract wins are in line with our strategy to develop our presence in one of our key developing markets, science and technology, providing us with the opportunity to widen our expertise and grow our reputation as a cross-market leader.”

Filton in the press.

Work has begun on development of the Airbus Aerospace Park in Filton – a multi-million pound state-of-the-art engineering and technology campus scheduled for completion next year.

The aircraft manufacturer kicked off construction of the state-of-the-art facility at a special ceremony attended by company bosses, staff and local representatives last month.

Over 2,500 of the firm’s 4,000 employees will move to the park when it opens in 2013.

Mark Barclay, Senior Vice President of the Airbus Wings and Pylons Centre of Excellence, said :

“Filton is a centre of excellence for aviation with a proud history going back over a century and this investment will help ensure that the UK stays at the forefront of design and engineering in the decades to come.”

“This is an important milestone that shows our long term commitment to Filton and the UK.”

As part of the plans, Bristol Aeroplane Company’s former base, the currently vacant Pegasus House, will be renovated and brought back into use as a modern conference centre and offices.

A total of 500 employees will be hired over the next year across a variety of departments at both UK sites in Filton and Broughton.

Filton and Bradley Stoke MP Jack Lopresti praised the aerospace giant at the launch, saying:

“The new Airbus Business Park will secure thousands of jobs locally and is a fitting recognition to the home of British aviation and the centre of excellence that we have in Filton.”

Pegasus House, Airbus, Filton, Bristol

Plans to refurbish the historic Pegasus House, on the Airbus site in Filton, have been given the go-ahead by planners at South Gloucestershire Council (SGC).

The Grade II listed building, constructed in the 1930s, is currently covered by scaffolding and white sheeting but it will be restored to its former glory as part of a £70 million project to create a new research, design, manufacturing and assembly complex within the Airbus site.

The nearby 18th century Old Filton House will also be restored as part of the scheme, with 19th and 20th century additions being demolished.

Once the refurbishment is complete, Pegasus House will provide 3,600sqm of modern office accommodation for 450 staff including a café and a 350 seat auditorium.

Also included within the plans for the multi-million’ Airbus Aerospace Park’ is a new low-rise main office building that will house 2,300 staff.

Capita Symonds, the company appointed to manage project, previously said the work on Pegasus House would start in February 2012 and be completed in the second quarter of 2013.
